  "Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is becoming more and more popular in system development, which is due to its flexibility to integrate and organize available functionalities. A domain where such flexibility is crucial is Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), which aims to help the elderly people independently living in their homes. As well known, the proportion of elderly people keeps increasing since the end of last century, which poses great challenges to our society and calls for solutions both efficacious and cost-effective. The concept of using SOA to construct a so-called mutual assistance community to help the elderly people independently living is carried during the PhD study. SOA and AOP (aspect oriented programming) technologies are studied to organize assistive devices around the elderly people in an adaptive way, so that changes would be monitored and adaptations could be carried out in agile way. Human-services could be integrated in the service oriented computation, to produce effective services for the elderly people."

  "The objective of this doctorate is to add intelligence for system autonomy to Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs), resulting in adaptive and dependable business processes that can be dynamically optimized and corrected by the system to reduce the execution time and increase the availability. A first goal is achieving self-optimizing, self-healing hybrid SOAs in which human actors operate next to conventional IT systems exposed as web services. A second goal is to overcome what we consider the biggest limitation of BPEL processes: BPEL process definitions are static. This sharply contrasts with real-world practice in which processes continuously evolve to improve operational efficiency. It is our intent to extend a BPEL orchestration engine with the capacity to dynamically modify business processes and to optimize the process model. For this purpose we shall implement economic process re-engineering guidelines by exploiting existing computer science techniques. Tecnopolis is the name of the research centre for which I worked from 1990 to 1996.)
